On the 1910 census we find that Mary has died, as Richard Sr. is listed as a widower. The census was taken on 18 May 1910. 

This house and family was the 230th visited by this enumerator.

Richard Sr. is listed as the head of the household, male, white, 66 years old and a widower. It continues with is and his parents birthplace being England. He repeats that he immegrated to the United States in 1876, and is a naturalized citizen.

He speaks English and is a Farmer. He is employed. His industry is a "General Farm", and has not been out of work.

He can read and write English.

He owns the farm, without a mortgage. His farm is #182 on the Farm Schedule.

John is his son, and is male, white and 39 years old. He is single. His and his parents birthplace is England.

He immigrated in 1887 and is a naturalized citizen of the United States.

He speaks, reads, and writes English.

He works on the farm, and is employed as a worker.

This is the 1910 Langdon family census. IThe family has stayed in Blaine, Butte, South Dakota.

It starts with Richard Jr., who is head of the household, male, white and 35 years of age. He has been married 3 years.


He and his parents were born in England. He speaks English. He is a farmer on his General Farm. He is farming on his own account.

He can read and write in English.

He owns his farm which is free of a mortgage. His farm is 169 on the Farm Schedule.

His wife is May. She is female, white, and 24 years of age. She has had 2 children, both of whom are living. She was born in Iowa as was her parents.

She speaks, reads and writes English.

Their daughters are:

May E. who is 2 years old and was born in South Dakota.

Marjorie M. is 13 months old and was born in South Dakota.

It does not list any members of the family that might be listed on the census sheet.

It states that he is male, white, and married. 

He is 61 years of age. His birth year is 1844.

He was born in England.

Richard stated that he has been in South Dakota for 22 years, having settled there in 1883.

He is a resident of South Dakota, United States.

Richard also stated that he has been in the United States for 29 years having arrived here in 1876.

His parents were born in England.

Mary A. is the next person enumerated on the census. Her relationship to Richard is as wife, and she is white, and female.

Her birth month is August in the year 1844. This census was completed in June 1900, ao she hasn't had her birthday yet to make her the same age as Richard.

Mary has been married to Richard. She has had 5 children, but only 3 are living.

She and her parents were born in England.

Mary immigrated in 1886, and has been in the United States 14 years. She can read, write and speak English.

The Langdons have two sons living with them.

The first son John is white, male and his birth month is October, in the year 1870. He is single.

The second son listed, Richard Jr., is white, male and his birth month is March in 1874. He is single.

Both sons immigrated with their mother (presumably) in 1886, and have lived in the United States for 14 years.

I am not sure on their naturalization status. They are both listed as farmers and have not been unemployed in 1900.

They can both read, write, and speak English.

The next census that I found is the 1900 US Federal Census in Blaine, Butte, South Dakota.

The Langdon family is the 58th family enumerated in this area. It states that Richard is the head of the household, and he is white and male. 

His birth month is January. His birth year is 1844. He is 55 years old and married 35 years. 

Both he and his parents were born in England. 

He immigrated in 1876 and has been in the US 24 years. He is a naturalized citizen.

His occupation is farmer. He has not been unemployed in 1900.

He can read, write and speak English.

He owns his farm without a mortgage, and it is a farm. His farm is #54 on the Farm Schedule.

This is the first census that I found Richard Langdon listed on with his family. This is the 1881 England census in Cornwall, St. Agness. Richard is listed with his mother, Mary Ann Langdon who is described as the head of the house hold. The family is living in the village of Trevellas. Even though, she is listed as married her husband is not in the household. It is crossed out that she is a wife of a gold miner. She is 36 years old and was born  at St. Agnes (which is a small area close to Truro).

Her daughter Minnie listed next. She is 13 and is listed as a scholar (she goes to school). She also was born in St. Agnes.

John is Mary Ann's son who is 10 years old. He is a scholar and was also born in St. Agnes.

Richard is the last child listed. He is 7 years old, is a scholar, and was born in St. Agnes.

Annie Brunner just happened to be the person enumerated on line 14. She had a few extra questions to answer:

Her name, and where her parents were born (in Russia, columns 35, 36, and 37).

Her "Mother Tongue"/Native language is German (column 38).

She is not a veteran (column 40).

She does not have a Federal Social Security number (column 42).

She does not work out of the home (columns 45, 46, and 47).

She has not been married more than once (column 48).

She was 18 when she married (column 49).

She has had 4 children (column 50).

Brunner Family - Carl Brunner - page 7

This is the 1940 census. The Brunner family was enumerated on the 13th of April 1940.

Looking at the Carl Brunner family you can see that not much has changed regarding Carl and Annie - besides getting 10 years older.

What is different from the 1930 census is the column that is for "Residence, April 1 1935". The government wanted to know where the enumerated population was 5 years earlier. The possibility is that large numbers of people moved throughout the country during the Great Depression of the 1930's. The Government wanted to get a better idea as to just how many were "mobile" during that decade.

Carl was the one who was interviewed by the enumerator designated by the circled X.

The enumerator spelled Reinhold's name Reynald, probably due to Carl's pronunciation. Reynald has no profession (NP).

 Annie and Emma do housework.

Ester is 17 years old and in her 2nd year of High School.

Edward is also a student.

The other item to note is that Leo Brunner now has his own farm "next" to his father's. Carl is still renting the land he is farming. 

Leo is now 29 years old and married.

He finished 8 years of school which was not uncommon in those years. 

He is a farmer, of his own account for 52 weeks in the year. 

He did receive income of $50.00 or more from sources other than money, wages or salary.

His farm is #38 on the Farm Schedule.

His wife is Rose who is 26 years old. Rose supplied the information to the enumerator for this household.

She attended school for 6 years.

She is English Canadian. 

She is an American citizen by virtue of her husband's citizenship.

Leo and Rose's children are not yet at school: 

Helmute, aged 7
Louella, aged 5
Darline, aged 3
Arnetta, aged 1

All of the children were born in South Dakota.

By 1930 the Brunner family had moved to Butte County, South Dakota.

The Dwelling number is 21.

The family was the 21st to be enumerated. Carl is renting the land he is farming. He is 44 years old and has been married 20 years.  

The number/letter 13,19, V, are codes for the census office. 

It repeats that he came to the Unied States in 1905 [versus 1906 in the 1920 census] and is naturalized. 

He farms a "General Farm". the UUUU is another code for the census office to insert.

He is the employer on the farm. 

He is not a veteran of the United States.

His farm is #17 on the Farm Schedule.

The next page lists  his wife Anna, who was 18 when she was married.

It looks like she gave the information to the census taker, designated by the "H".

She has never attended school, and on this census it states that she is unable to read or write. The census then repeats where she and her parents were born.

[Where is Annie the daughter? Did she die in the past 10 years or did she get married and move away?]

Carl Jr. is listed first among the children He is 21 years old and single.

He is not attending school, but can read and write. 

It repeats the information about where he and his parents were born.

Because the language line is empty he speaks and reads English. 

He is a laborer, possibly working on the farm.

Leo, who is 19 and his sister Bertha, aged 15 years, do not go to school. They can both read and write English.

Leo might be working on the farm, and Bertha might be helping her mother at home.

Emma aged 12, and Reinhold aged 10 are both attending school and can read and write.

Ester is 7 years old and Edward is 4 years old. Edward is the exception - it says he was born in Illinois. I wonder if he is Annie's (the daughter) child?

What I find interesting is that in the columns where the mother and father were born, Grimm is crossed out, and Russia is not. That is also noted on Carl's census entry. There is a town named Grimm in Russia. Please see refer to future posts.

Brunner Family - Carl Brunner - page 5

If you look farther down the census page, you will see another family with the name of Brunner.

The father is Alex who is 40 years old and his wife Mollie who is 42 years old. They have 7 children: Mollie, Lydia, Alex, Carl, Frieda, Helmut, and Robert.

Alex and his family immigrated in 1911. Notice that their dauther, Frieda, and her brothers Helmut and Robert were born in the United states. 

That Brunner family is followed by Elizabeth Shafer with her two sons Peter and Carl. They immigrated to the United States in 1907.

The Alex Brunner family, and Elizabeth Shafer and her sons are "aliens" they are not naturalized. 

I also noticed that these two families have "Sartov" written in then scratched out.

I believe that Alex is a relative - perhaps a brother - to Carl Brunner.

I also believe that Elizabeth Shafer could be both Alex and Carl's mother.

The 1920 census shows Carl and Annie's family on 2 pages.

In 1920 the family is living in LaGrange, Weld, Colorado.

The house number is a "Farm". The Dwelling number is 57. The Brunners are the 60th family visited by the census enumerator.

Carl is renting the land, signified by the "R".

This census startes that Carl and Annie immigrated in 1906, that they are both naturalized (Annie is naturalized because Carl is, in 1914). 

Both Carl and Annie can read and write, as can their daughter Annie, and Carl their son. Both parents were born in Russia and they speak German. 

[I am wondering if Caradow was meant as Crakow/Krakow.]

All four, Carl and Annie (parents) and Annie and Carl (children) speak English. 

The notation of "General Farm" is the industry Carl works in. "OA" means he is working on his own account. 

41 is the enumeration of Carl's farm on the "Farm Schedule".

On this census Annie the daughter is said to have been born in Ohio as apposed to the 1910 census which said she was born in Colorado.

Carl the son is 10 years old.

On the 2nd page there are more children:

Leo is 8 years old. He attends school and was born in Colorado. It states his parents were born in Russia. [Sartov - which is crossed out - is a city in western Russia. Sartov is a major port on the Volga River north of Volograd.]

Lydia is a daughter who is 6 years old and goes to school.

Another daughter is Bertha who is nearly 5 years old. She is not old enough to go to school.

The youngest sister/daughter in 1920 is Emma who is 1 1/2 years old.

This is a copy of the 1917 World War1 draft registration card.

Page 1 was filled out by Carl.

At this time Carl and his family were living in Greely, Weld, Colorado. Their address was Box 38, R.F.D #2.

He was 33 years old and he states that his birthday is July 3 1885.

The [card] order number is a2724.

He states on the card that he is a nauturalized American citizen.

He is self employed as a Farmer.

His next of kin is Mrs. Annie Brunner at the same address.

Page 2 was filled out by the registrar.

It states that Carl is of medium height and build. He had gray eyes and dark brown hair.

Rachel M. Ferman signed her name as the registrar. The card was filled out on Sept 12, 1918.

Also listed is his wife Annie. She  female, white and 23 years of age. She has been marrid 5 years. She has had 3 children, but only 2 children are living. She is also from German Russia as are her parents. She immegrated in 1886. She does not speak English.

Annie who is female, white and 3 years old. It says on this census that she was born in Colorado.

Carl is male, white and 1 year old and was also born in Colorado.

Carl Brunner - head of household - male - white - 25 - married 5 years. Born in German Russia as was his parents. According to other records he immigrated in 1886 nor 1896. He speak and read English. He is renting a farm.
